Clean-Brews & Clean-Ups South Baltimore Brewery District! 🍻🚯

That’s a Wrap(per) on the 2nd South Baltimore Brewery District Cleanup!

We had an amazing turnout with 63 new and familiar faces joining us to collect data on plastic bags and plastic bottles while cleaning up their communities.

Trash Data📊

Our volunteers collected a similar amount of plastic bottles and plastic bags.

💧1,336 plastic bottles

🛍️216 plastic bags

What do the similarities in these numbers mean?

It could indicate consistent littering patterns in the surrounding areas and a correlation to local businesses where single-use plastics are sold. However, the relatively low number of plastic bags compared to the plastic bottles is likely due to the plastic bag ban in Baltimore City and County—a positive trend we're also seeing in other parts of Baltimore, including the 2024 Annual Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore Dumpster Dive. Demonstrating this data consistently will be a huge motivator for extending plastic bag bans across the state (currently, 16 jurisdictions in Maryland have bans in effect).

Legislation like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging will address items packaged in plastic by decreasing the volume, increasing the recyclability of packaging, and increasing the collection of packaging afterward, placing the responsibility back on the producers who produce the packaging in the first place. The beginning stages are already underway with a needs assessment of Maryland’s recycling systems and a Advisory Council for recommendations for the full bill’s passing in 2025.

Thank you to the South Baltimore Brewery District for not only sponsoring the event but also rolling up their sleeves to work alongside volunteers once again!

Remember to redeem your vouchers for a free refreshing beverage at one of the participating local Baltimore breweries to commemorate your support in helping our communities thrive!

Shoutout to our Board Members, Rachel and Jack!

They orchestrate these cleanups from the initial idea to setup and teardown. It wouldn't be possible without their dedication!

See You at Cheers to Clean Water on September 21st! 🌊🍻
