As 2025 approaches, we’re reflecting on an impactful year and the exciting future ahead for Trash Free Maryland.

75% of Maryland’s population is covered by plastic bag bans or fees already in place. Central Maryland is entirely on board, and data shows that these policies shift consumer behavior, increasing the use of reusable bags. We’re committed to providing resources and advocacy support to help more jurisdictions pass similar bans. The more local wins we achieve, the closer we get to a statewide ban.

We received numerous complaints during the pandemic about Illegal Bulk Trash Dumping, there was a perception that dumping activity in Baltimore was increasing.

This growing awareness of bulk trash dumping led us to seek effective deterrents and with the help of the Abell Foundation we identified 10 proven practices from across the country to curb illegal dumping.

This year, we welcomed Kelly Doordan as our new Executive Director! Kelly brings a wealth of experience, having worked with EPA Region 9 tribal leaders to create sustainable waste diversion practices. Her leadership is already bringing fresh energy and focus to our mission, eliminating litter, one policy and clean-up at a time.

We’re just getting started. In 2025, we’ll hit the ground running developing stronger policies, hosting more impactful cleanups, and continuing to educate and research solutions to the waste crisis.

Consider donating to a Trash Free Maryland to help develop better policy, host more community-building efforts, educate, and research on solutions to the waste crisis.

Happy Holidays,

Trash Free Maryland Team
