Sweeping Success: Cleanup in the South Baltimore Brewery District!🍻🚯
Last Sunday morning, more than 50 eager volunteers gathered in the South Baltimore Brewery District.
Their mission?
To roll up their sleeves and clean up their community.
The Result?
Volunteers collected data using the Real Time Recall Method, and tallied a whopping 1,230 plastic bottles and 273 plastic bags!
What Does This Data Mean?
Well, the high number of plastic bottles reinforces the urgent need for action, as it is #1 most collected littered item in Maryland, according to data from Ocean Conservancy! The data collected Sunday will be instrumental in supporting bills like Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging, aiming to reduce plastic bottle litter and increase recycling efforts.
The plastic bag number shows there is still work to be done, even though data from the Annual Waterfront Partnership Dumpster Dive (coming up April 13th!) has shown promising decreases in plastic bag usage in Baltimore City. Bring Your Own Bag Bills serve to tackle the plastic bag problem, with 16 jurisdictions in Maryland including Baltimore City and Baltimore County having plastic bag bans in place.
We greatly appreciate our brewery partners who consistently and tirelessly work to improve the community surrounding their small, local businesess!
As always thanks to the Baltimore ToolBank for providing the supplies!
Please consider donating to support ongoing efforts to tackle litter at its source and implement policies so we can all live in a Maryland free of trash, where our communities, public spaces, and waterways thrive.
Cheers!
